Countdown to Greste's homecoming

After more than a year in an Egyptian prison and two days in Cyprus, journalist Peter Greste will be back in Australia early on Thursday morning.

The freed al-Jazeera reporter is expected to land in Brisbane at 1am.

The award-winning correspondent was freed from jail and deported on Sunday.

He immediately flew to Cyprus with his brother and spent two days resting.

He will be privately reunited with his family after touching down and will hold a full media conference later in the day.

Mr Greste told the ABC at Larnaca airport he was elated to be going home.

Meanwhile, a picture he shared on Twitter of himself standing ankle-deep in the sea giving peace signs with both fingers has been retweeted more than 4500 times.

"Free in Cyprus! Feels sweet. Peter back online for first time in 400+ days," he wrote.

Following his release, Mr Greste has urged supporters to continue calling for his colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed to also be freed.
