Police are preparing for potential revenge attacks after a suspected high-ranking member of the Calabrian mafia was gunned down outside his home in Melbourne in a suspected gangland hit.

John Peter Latorre, 64, has been identified as the man shot dead this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Danny Travaglini confirmed an unknown person shot the victim while he was leaving his Buchanan Place home at Greenvale about 4.30am.

The incident happened as the fruiterer, who ran a fruit and vegetable wholesale business at the Melbourne Market in Epping, planned to leave for work.

He had opened his garage door to go to his car when he was shot.

He was found with gunshot wounds to his upper body outside the home by a family member.

Two female family members who were also home at the time were not physically injured during the shooting.

Paramedics tried to revive Latorre, but he died at the scene.

A woman was later taken from the home in an ambulance and treated for shock.

At this time it is not known how many offenders were involved in the incident or how they left the area.

"We suspect it wasn't a drive-by shooting, the male was approached in his driveway as he was walking out of his garage," Travaglini said.

Police are preparing for revenge attacks as a result of Latorre's death.
