The Greens are threatening to establish a parliamentary alternative to a banking royal commission if the federal government refuses to act.

Senator Peter Whish-Wilson has sought advice from the Senate clerk about establishing a rarely used parliamentary commission of inquiry, with similar powers to a royal commission.

With Labor and crossbench support, only one coalition MP would be required to cross the floor in the lower house to establish the inquiry, he said.
