Australia's youngest senator is pushing for the voting age to be lowered to 16 by introducing a bill to federal parliament.

Greens senator Jordon Steele-John, 23, presented his private bill to the upper house on Monday, with debate on the legislation adjourned.

In April, the West Australian senator said lowering the voting age would allow almost 600,000 Australians aged 16 and 17 to engage in the democratic process.
