Greens move to replace Senate prayer

An outgoing Greens senator will move to scrap the Lord's Prayer from being read in federal parliament.

On Wednesday, soon-to-retire Greens senator Lee Rhiannon successfully moved a motion to have the issue looked at by a parliamentary committee.

Senator Rhiannon wants the prayer at the start of Senate sitting sessions to be replaced with an "inclusive" statement.

She believes the prayer should be substituted with the words: "Senators, let us, in silence, pray or reflect upon our responsibilities to all people of Australia, and to future generations."
