Great White shark makes rare leap from ocean

Tourists on a Queensland fishing cruise were lucky to enjoy a unique view of one of the ocean’s great predators in full flight.

American exchange student Haylee Webb was aboard a chartered boat off the Sunshine Coast that was taking her cage diving to see Great White sharks up close.

But she didn’t expect to see one of the mighty sea creatures launching itself out of the ocean only metres from the vessel.

Luckily she captured the stunning and rarely seen moments on video.

Great whites weight from 650 kilograms to 1100 kilograms and need to reach a speed 40kph to propel themselves up to three metres from the sea.

Like in this instance, sharks breach from the ocean in pursuit of prey. The most common place to see them do this is at Seal Island in False Bay, South Africa where they hunt seals.
