A federal government freeze forcing patients to pay more to see a doctor will be lifted before the election if one of the nation's most powerful lobby groups gets its way.

Australian Medical Association president Brian Owler says the four-year indexation freeze on the Medicare rebate, paid when patients visit a GP, will remain a "big" electoral headache for the government going into the next election.

"The AMA and others will work to have it abolished before the election," he said on Thursday.
