Govt tries again on gun smuggling law

The federal government is having another shot at imposing mandatory five-year jail terms for those convicted of gun smuggling.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan said Labor now had the chance to do better, having initially rejected previous legislation because of a longstanding objection to mandatory sentences.

"They have a chance to join with the government to send the strongest possible message that this parliament opposes gun crime," he told parliament on Tuesday.
