Govt to spend $220 on medical graduates
The federal government will spend $220 million a year on a program to boost the number of medical graduates.
It will use the funds on the Australian General Practice Training program, a government-backed postgraduate vocational training program for graduates seeking a career as a GP.
From this year the selection of graduates into the program is set to be administered by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.
Graduates of the program undergo up to four years of training in various locations including rural and regional areas.
Federal Assistant Health Minister Dr David Gillespie said the transfer would bring Australia into line with other specialist medical colleges.
