Govt moves to protect farmer information

The federal government has moved to keep private the information of farmers who register themselves as employers of foreign workers.

Treasurer Scott Morrison on Thursday presented to parliament a bill that ensures the details - required under new backpacker tax rules - are not publicly available following concerns about privacy.

The tax commissioner will only able to disclose the protected data to the Fair Work Ombudsman if a business is reasonably suspected of non-compliance.
