Govt has no youth jobs plan: Labor

The latest jobs figures show Australia facing a youth unemployment crisis but the government has no plan to fix it, the federal opposition says.

It says the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show unemployment held steady at 6.2 per cent last month but that youth unemployment rose from 13.5 to 14 per cent.

Labor's employment spokesman Brendan O'Connor says the figure is the highest since 2001.

"It has not been this high since Prime Minister Tony Abbott was the employment minister," he told reporters in Melbourne.

He seized on reports Mr Abbott has warned cabinet colleagues to stop "jockeying" over their long-term ambitions, including as his successor.

"The government does not have plan to respond to this growing crisis, instead senior cabinet ministers are fighting over their own jobs ... rather than fighting for jobs for all Australians," Mr O'Connor said.
