The federal government is spending $20 million on nurses to provide physical and emotional support to women suffering breast cancer.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will announce the additional funding for McGrath Breast Care Nurses in Hobart on Friday, alongside Health Minister Sussan Ley.

The money will be divided over four years from 2017/18, funding up to 57 nurses in 55 locations, mainly in regional and rural communities.

The government gave $18.5 million to the program in 2013/14, supporting an estimated 15,000 patients.
