Treasurer Scott Morrison has dismissed early election speculation as a symptom of the "silly season".

"We're governing, that's what we're doing," he told Sky News on Monday.

His cabinet colleague Simon Birmingham says he fully expects the government to run full term, meaning an election will be held around September.

Labor frontbencher Michelle Rowland said the opposition wasn't privy to when the election would be held but insisted the community had "deep distrust" of the government.

"We always need to be ready for an election at any time," she told Sky News.
