Govt flags jobs package for young people

The federal government has flagged a jobs package that aims to prevent young people from being relegated to a life on welfare.

An early intervention model will ensure those out of work when they're 15 to 20 years old are less likely to be so when they're older.

"If you can't get them into work, then when they're 25 to 30 they will be written off on a welfare life," Social Services Minister Scott Morrison told parliament on Monday.

The minister has previously touched on Australia learning from a successful New Zealand model which targets young people at risk of intergenerational welfare dependence.

The jobs package is expected to be announced alongside a highly-anticipated families package designed to help mothers return to work.
