Governor-General visits Middle East troops

The governor-general has made a pre-Christmas visit to Australian troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

David Hurley also met with Australian diplomats and the presidents of both countries.

"On behalf of all Australians, I thank all of those who are serving their nation, at home or on deployment," Mr Hurley said on Thursday.

"This time of year is particularly difficult for those away from home and it is important that we also recognise the impact on their families."

There are currently about 450 Australian troops deployed to the Middle East.
