Government to resubmit union-busting bill

The federal government will reintroduce its so-called union-busting bill into parliament on Wednesday, a week after it was voted down in the upper house.

Attorney-General Christian Porter says while bill remains unchanged from last week there should be a "strong starting point for a fresh round of consultations with cross-bench senators".

"Since the bill was voted on last week in the Senate, issues have been raised which were not raised with the government during consultations on the bill," Mr Porter said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told the party the federal government on Tuesday the party wouldn't back down on the legislation.

The coalition's "ensuring integrity" bill was rebuffed in the upper house last week, with One Nation opposing it in a humiliating defeat for the government.

The so-called "militant" construction union, the CFMMEU, has been cited as the reason to pass the legislation.

The bill makes it easier to deregister unions and ban officials for repeated law-breaking.

Mr Porter said on Wednesday the government was willing to work with crossbenchers.

"Anyone who looks at this bill objectively and rationally can see it in no way prevents organisations from continuing to work in their members' interests where they do so lawfully," he said.
