Gonski vans target PM's electorate

A convoy of vibrant green Gonski vans will descend on the prime minister's electorate to drum up support for the national school funding plan.

About 300 school principals and teachers met in Sydney on Saturday for a NSW Teachers Federation meeting, where securing a commitment to the Gonski reforms was the hot topic.

The federal government has pledged $2.8 billion in extra money for schools over the next four years, but this falls $7 billion short of the six-year deal the previous Labor government had promised.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) wants the federal government to commit to the full six-year, $10 billion school funding plan the former Labor government had pledged.

"I give a Gonski"-branded vans will target Tony Abbott's Warringah electorate on Sunday to spread the union message to the prime minister's voters.

"This reform is too important," AEU president Angelo Gavrielatos said on Saturday.

"Let's support funding resources that are required to give every child the opportunity to succeed."

Mr Gavrielatos said if Mr Abbott failed to deliver the fifth year of funding in the May budget he would compromise future opportunities for Australian children.

NSW Primary Principals' Association president Geoff Scott said Mr Abbott would be judged in history on his reaction to the education reforms.

The Gonski vans will complete a five-week road trip at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday.
