Gold Coast to submit proposal for Commonwealth Games bid

The Gold Coast council will submit a proposal to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026 after the Victorian Government backtracked on hosting earlier this month.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said that only existing infrastructure would be used to host the games, including existing accommodation for the athlete's village.

The bid comes as Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk publicly announced the state government would not step in to host the games after the Victorian Government pulled out.

Palaszczuk said they are focusing on the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games instead.

Tate says he is submitting a proposal to the State Government despite the Premier's decision.

"It's about having the games in Australia, [Palaszczuk] has got the opportunity to save Australia's reputation," Tate said while addressing the media.

"For us, the key is [we use] all the existing infrastructure on the Gold Coast, fit all the sports into that."

"I'm not asking for a yes, I'm just asking for the opportunity to table the proposal, I'm confident the proposal will convince them to get it over the line."

The Victorian Government backed out of hosting the games earlier this month after the predicted cost reached $7 billion.
