Axe-wielding robber who terrorised Gold Coast cabbie on the run

A taxi driver has been taken to hospital after a man with a tomahawk attacked him and demanded money.

Police said the 50-year-old driver was attacked at around 4am, sparking a violent struggle.

"The taxi driver attempted to flee from the scene, at which time he's crashed into the wall here," Inspector Karen Shaw said.

The driver's employer said he was in shock and traumatised, but only required stitches and will spend tonight with family.

"I can't imagine what would have happened, he's very, very lucky that he's only had what would be considered a relatively minor injury considering the weapon that was used," Gold Coast Cabs CEO Gordana Blazevic said.

An hour earlier the attacker threatened a service station attendant at Pacific Pines using the same weapon.

He demanded cash, but the staff member managed to hide in a back room before he could lash out.

"The offender with the tomahawk smashed the door on two occasions," Insp. Shaw said.

The armed man is still wanted by police and is described as 180cm tall, and was wearing a black and white spray jacket at the time of the attacks.
