Police have said it is very lucky no one was killed after a Jeep Cherokee and a bus collided on the Gold Coast last night, sending four people to hospital.

Paramedics assessed nine patients after the collision on Brisbane Road in Biggera Waters just after 7pm.

Queensland Police Inspector Scott Knowles said the female passenger suffered compound fractures and was still in hospital this afternoon, but that both drivers and the Jeep passenger had been discharged.

Knowles said it was believed the Jeep had "crossed to the opposite side of the road and collected the bus head-on".

He said witnesses told police they saw the Jeep travelling at a high speed.

"That intersection is quite a heavy intersection in terms of traffic and pedestrians moving, it is certainly very lucky with what has occurred that there wasn't any more serious injured or … deaths," Knowles said.

The Jeep driver, a 25-year-old man from nearby Arundel, has undergone drug and alcohol testing.

He has been released by police and has not been charged as investigations continue.

Eastbound traffic was briefly diverted away from the busy road.

The forensic crash unit has been called to investigate.

Correction: On 6 March 2024, 9News in Brisbane and the Gold Coast broadcast a report about a traffic incident involving a car and a bus in Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast.
