A man is on the run after allegedly breaking into a car dealership in Robina on the Gold Coast and stealing a top-of-the-range Mercedes Benz.

Police said he was inside the dealership for about two hours around midnight and 1am, apparently deciding which vehicle to steal.

Ultimately, he selected a Mercedes Benz GLE, worth $200,000.

The manager, who got an alarm on his phone, watched it play out on CCTV.

He said the man drove the car through the shop's glass windows and even a desk, and smashed past bollards to escape.

The high-priced getaway did not last long, with the alleged thief dumping the totalled vehicle one street away in Christine Avenue.

The man remains on the run, with police deploying the dog squad to find him.

Police said the alleged theft caused about $500,000 worth of damage.
