Gold Coast man gets probation after assaulting workers for disconnecting his power, said the unpaid bills were in his 'spam' folder

A Gold Coast man has been sentenced for assaulting two workers who were about to disconnect the power to his Upper Coomera business after he hadn't paid the bill.

The Southport Magistrates Court heard business owner Brendan Romaine told the workers not to disconnect his power, because his wife was about to pay the bill.

He claims he never saw the original bill as it was lost in his email spam folder.

But the workers said they had "no choice" and had to complete the job.

A frustrated Romaine then slapped the clipboard out of the hands of one of the workers, the court heard.

He told the other worker to take his sunglasses off and then proceeded to hit him in the face.

The court heard Romaine was handed the disconnection notice just three minutes prior, and was waiting for the receipt to come through on his phone.

The magistrate called it an "unprovoked attack" on two men going about their business. "It was pretty full on, just went to work doing our job and got assaulted," Joel Hoolihan, one of the assaulted workers, told 9News.

Romaine's lawyer called it a "trivial matter" and said the situation could have been avoided if the workers used their discretion to allow a few more moments for him to prove his payment.

Romaine pleaded guilty to assaulting the workers.

The father-of-three was put on 12 months' probation. No conviction was recorded.

"It's a good outcome," Mr Hoolihan said.
