A man has died after an alleged assault outside a kebab shop on the Gold Coast earlier this month.

Brazilian national Ivan Susin, 29, succumbed to serious head injuries sustained 11 days ago, when he was allegedly randomly attacked while sitting on a bench.

He was allegedly punched, lost consciousness, and fell, hitting his head on the ground after being caught up in a brawl over a stolen chip.

"The man sustained serious head injuries and was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday afternoon, October 11, Queensland Police said today.

Mr Susin was in Australia to fulfil his dream of studying English overseas. His devastated mother had been by his bedside for 11 days, while his sister is now on her way to the Gold Coast.

His alleged attacker, Rickey Lefoe, 27, is on bail, after being charged with grevious bodily harm on the day of the assault.

Police will be looking to upgrade the charge during his next court appearance at Southport Court on Wednesday.

Lefoe's lawyer said he's expressed genuine sorrow to the young man's family, and that his prayers are with them during this difficult time.
