Man could be released from jail in weeks after home invasion and police chase

A man who held a knife to a naked man's throat during a terrifying home invasion, before stealing his car and credit cards, was just after "fast cash", a court has been told.

Boady James Davis then led police on a wild chase through Biggera Waters, Labrador and Southport during which he reached speeds of up to 155km/hr.

He only stopped when he noticed flames erupting from the undercarriage.

Davis pleaded guilty to several offences including burglary and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, after launching the crime spree in August last year.

At the time he did not have a driver's licence.

The court heard he and another man broke into a Biggera Waters home in the early hours of the morning, before threatening a naked resident inside with a large Chinese-style knife.

Davis told the resident he would "cut his fingers off" if he didn't hand over his wallet or phone. Instead the man gave Davis the keys to his Ford Mondeo as well as some credit cards.

The pair were then spotted leaving a McDonald's at Harbourtown by a patrolling police car. That's when the chase started.

Davis led police through Oxley Drive and Hope Island Road, reaching speeds of up to 155km/hr, but when he noticed flames reaching over the roof he fled the car, allowing it to roll back and hit a police car.

He was tackled to the ground and taken into custody where he initially gave officers a fake name.

Defence barrister Nick McGhee told the court Davis, an aspiring personal trainer, was motivated by a need for money as he had financial issues.

He labelled it an "amateur" attempt, blaming his behaviour on the death of his mother to brain cancer.

The judge handed Davis a four-year jail sentence, but with time already served, he's eligible for parole in three weeks.
