Man arrested after 'jumping into river to avoid police'

A man allegedly jumped into the Nerang River in an attempt to evade police during a pursuit.

Kieran Gray, 29, from Mausland was allegedly spotted driving a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe bearing false NSW registration plates at high speeds in Carrara about 11am yesterday.

After being stopped by road spikes on Ross River Bridge during the two hour pursuit, he then allegedly attempted to steal another car at knife-point.

But as police approached, he jumped from the bridge, into the Nerang River.

However, police were on hand to arrest him.

He is wanted on a string of serious crimes, and police also say he has no licence.

The matter was briefly mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court today but no application was made for bail.
