Man accused of Gold Coast shopping centre abduction back behind bars

The man accused of kidnapping a young woman at a busy Gold Coast shopping centre car park is tonight back behind bars, a week after he was released on probation.

Andrew Bush, 47, has been charged with one count of kidnapping, unlawful entry and assault, following Monday’s frightening attack on a 26-year-old woman in the car park of Robina Town Centre.

The incident sparked a manhunt across South East Queensland.

9News has been told Bush’s son was the one who identified him. He saw his father in 9News' story last night at 6pm, in dashcam footage that showed him approaching other cars, moments after he's accused of sparking a rampage at 4.45pm.

His son then phoned his mother, who took her ex-husband to Mudgeeraba police station, where he was charged with the three offences.

The charges came seven days after Bush was released on probation and a suspended sentence for unrelated matters.

His matter was briefly heard in court this morning, but his lawyer chose to adjourn proceedings until March 26.

No bail application was made, with Bush to stay behind bars until his next court appearance.

The woman at the centre of the alleged attack claims she was walking to her car while on the phone to her mother, unaware she was being followed by an unknown man.

When she jumped into the driver’s side, the man allegedly forced his way into the passenger side and told her to drive north on the M1.

The phone call connected to her vehicle's Bluetooth and her mother, able to understand what was happening, phoned police.

"She rung police, they then rung up that number back and was able to talk to the offender direct,” Detective Inspector Brendan Smith told media yesterday.

Police have seized the car for forensic testing. Investigations continue.
