Jewellery valued at more than $100,000 was stolen from a Greek Orthodox Church in Red Hill, on the Mornington Peninsula.

Police have been told a sealed glass box containing an icon of the Virgin Mary and gold jewellery was smashed open.

The box contained rings, chains, bracelets, coins, bangles and crosses which were donated to the church in 1987.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
