A sheep has been caught in a woolly situation after getting itself stuck inside a cemetery in Melbourne.

Locals say the sheep first appeared in the cemetery in Glenroy a few months ago.

He became stranded despite several attempts from locals to coax him out.

Finally, a professional team from the animal sanctuary Edgar's Mission were called in to save the sheep yesterday.

After a three-hour rescue mission, the sheep, now dubbed "swagman" was rescued as more than a dozen people flocked to his aid.

The sheep has been taken to recover at the sanctuary.
