Palmer scathing of Lazarus' own party move

Despite Glenn Lazarus being a rugby league great, his former boss Clive Palmer believes the senator doesn't know a thing about teamwork.

The Palmer United Party leader is scathing of a decision by Senator Lazarus to form his own political party, after a decision to quit PUP earlier in the year.

Mr Palmer, now one of only two PUPs in federal parliament, claims his former colleague will be a "solitary figure who plays solitaire in his office all day long".

The senator didn't know what it was like to be on a proper team, he said of the man who played 22 games for Australia and the same number for NSW.

Mr Palmer claimed Senator Lazarus was only setting up his own party - to be known as the Glenn Lazarus Team - to secure an income for his wife Tess.

"Team Lazarus will follow a tradition of sports related failures in politics like Mel [sic] Meninga and The Australian Sports Party in WA," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Senator Lazarus says he is "really excited" after lodging paperwork with the Australian Electoral Commission, telling reporters in Canberra he wants to do the best job he can.

The independent doesn't have anybody in mind to join him yet, but said once the procedural steps were cleared he'll start calling for members.

He already has a website for the team, with the tag line "Doing the hard yards for Queensland".
