Former AFL player Glenn Archer fined $2k for assaulting runner at junior footy match

Former AFL star Glenn Archer has been convicted of assaulting a runner at his son's junior football match in Melbourne and ordered to pay compensation to replace the victim's broken glasses.

The dual North Melbourne premiership player pleaded guilty to assault for striking the runner at a Heidelberg oval on June 26 after entering the field when a scuffle broke out between players at the under-15s football match.

Archer said he “wasn't happy only 3 percent of the story” was told to the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court, despite pleading guilty to the charge in a bid to escape conviction.

He was convicted and fined $2000, and ordered to pay $955 to repair the victim's glasses.

Archer indicated he would appeal the decision.

The ex-Kangaroos player claimed he jumped the fence after the boundary umpire, who was the father of an opposition player, struck a player in the head.

"Instinctively, I go into protection mode, jumped the fence to protect the young boy," Archer told AFL.com.au at the time.

Police told the court he was then told by a runner to leave the field, causing him to lash out and strike the runner in the head.

Archer played more than 300 games for North Melbourne.
