A teenager is in a critical condition after an alleged drag race crash in Melbourne's southeast last night.

The 19-year-old was trapped in a burning Silver Ford Falcon for half an hour before she was flown to Alfred Hospital.

The woman is suffering from head injuries and severe burns to her arms, legs and back.

Police say the two cars collided on the South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, before slamming into a pole and bursting into flames at 11.30 pm (AEST).

"Police believe the driver of the Ford… lost control of his vehicle and hit the Commodore," police spokesman Senior Constable Adam West told the Herald Sun.

"Both cars ran off the roadway, mounted the centre median strip and collided with a concrete pole."

Witnesses recorded flames reaching five metres high as the two cars landed on top of each other.

Altogether four people were injured and no one was killed.

The road remains closed as the site is under investigation.
