Neighbours in the Queensland town of North Lakes have banded together in sadness, but not shock, after a nine-year-old girl was run over and severely injured by a speeding driver as she rollerbladed.

The accident, they say, was inevitable.

"As horrible as it is, it was a matter of time before something was going to happen," witness Zoe Fletcher said.

Dorrigo Court in North Lakes is a cul-de-sac with a 40km/hr speed limit, but residents say many drivers speed on the road.

The young girl was rollerblading on a neighbour's driveway before the accident happened.

She fell down and rolled out onto the road, where a car came around the corner and struck her.

She is now in intensive care with head and internal injuries, after being revived at the scene by her distraught father and a neighbour.

"It shouldn't come to this," witness John Fletcher said.

Police are investigating claims that the driver of the car is a notorious, serial speedster.

The community will now petition the local council for speed bumps.
