Human rights barrister says Australia should redirect aid from Indonesia to Nepal over Bali Nine executions

Human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson has called for Australia to halt aid to Indonesia in response to the imminent executions of Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Speaking at a rally for the pair in Sydney's Martin Place tonight, Mr Robertson said Australia's aid to Indonesia should be redirected to Nepal.

He also called on the government to cease cooperation with Indonesia over people smugglers until the nation agreed to stop executing drug criminals.

"(Chan and Sukumaran) will be offered a last cigarette, they will have a target pinned to their chest, they will be shot by a platoon of soldiers, several of whom will be issued with blanks for the pathetic pretense that they're not all responsible for the death," he said.

"Then, because death by firing squad does not often cause immediate loss of consciousness, they will have the coup de grace (of) a revolver at their head."

He also told the crowd the Australian government could still take action by going past the Indonesian government and straight to the UN, which could result in a last-minute stay of execution.

"That's something we can do, something that will create, possibly, sufficient embarrassment for Indonesia to stay its hand," he said.
