Drink driver jailed after deadly Geelong crash

Raza Hussain wanted nothing more than a good life for his family in Australia.

But on Christmas Day 2012, the refugee's life was taken when a drunken Anthony Davis ploughed into his cab.

Life hasn't gotten any easier for wife Asma Raza, who has been forced to raise the family's five young children alone.

Anthony Davis was today jailed for six years for culpable and reckless driving, to serve a minimum of three.

On the day of the crash, Davis was emotional over a relationship break down and the death of his mother.

He drank beer and a bottle of liqueur, before getting behind the wheel of his Holden sedan.

His blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he lost control on Ballarat Road at more than 100km an hour, crashing into Raza Hussain.

Geelong County Court heard that, since the tragedy, Davis had become suicidal.

“You created such hardship and grief for Raza Hussain's family that you effectively feel you do not deserve to feel better,” said Judge Frances Hogan.

Anthony Davis wept through most of the sentencing and the judge acknowledged he was deeply remorseful and burdened by guilt and shame. But she described his driving as truly woeful and terrifying, and jail was an appropriate punishment.

The judge noted Davis' early plea, cooperation with police and the fact he had no criminal record.
