Gas prices are set to soar and jobs are at risk as Australia faces a critical shortage.

The ACCC is warning of a significant energy shortfall next year, and is pointing the finger at big gas companies.

The consumer watchdog has blamed companies for selling too much supply overseas and neglecting the domestic market.

These are some of the findings in a report to be released today, which also claims the recent east coast shortfall could see energy prices climb even further and force some businesses to close.

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers has urged exporters to do the right thing by Australia and ensure there's enough gas here.

But if they don't, the government will have the option of intervening in the market.

It could resort to pulling an emergency trigger which would force exporters to reserve more for domestic use.

The national energy regulator suspended market operations just weeks ago to ensure adequate supply was directed to domestic areas facing short supply.
