Gas leak forces evacuation of Sydney homes

A leak from a high pressure gas main in Sydney's west has prompted the evacuation of surrounding homes.

The leak on a median strip in a Toongabbie street was reported about 1.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

A Fire & Rescue NSW spokesman said emergency crews set up an exclusion zone and about 50 local residents were asked to move to safety.

They were allowed to return after the gas company fixed the leak and the area was declared safe, he said.
