Gai Waterhouse’s top Melbourne Cup Day tips

Racing titan Gai Waterhouse has offered up her tips for the Melbourne Cup tomorrow.

It may come as no surprise that she has recommended her own horse, "lightweight chance" Cismontane, as the best investment for anybody having a casual flutter.

"I think he's got an excellent chance of winning the Cup," she told A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw.

"He's got great intestinal fortitude."

Waterhouse, whose horse Fiorente won the Melbourne Cup in 2013, also offered her thoughts on the other standouts in the field,

She said it was hard to look past last year's winner, Almandin.

"He's extremely well weighted," she said.

"He bolted in The Bart Cummings, and that's exactly the race he's won leading into the Cup last year."

She said Humidor's form leading in to the race that stops a nation was "absolutely sensational".

Single Gaze also "definitely" had a chance to win, she said.

The latter horse is the only one in the 2017 field ridden by a female jockey.

"It's nice to see the women doing well," Waterhouse said.

"I engage lady jockeys, I engage guys. As long as they ride well that's all I'm looking for."
