Funding for life-saving treatment restored

A Perth woman suffering from a unique combination of extremely rare autoimmune disorders has had federal funding for her life-saving treatment restored for another year.

Mother-of-two and research scientist May Ali, 43, is the only person in the world to be diagnosed with both necrotising autoimmune myositis and atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS).

Earlier this month, her doctor's application to continue the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme-subsidised treatment Eculizumab, which costs $500,000 a year, was rejected.

But after a huge response to an online campaign and media coverage, funding for the treatment for Ms Ali and other aHUS sufferers was secured for another year.
