Funding boost for diabetes research

The quest to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes will be boosted with an extra $35 million in research funding.

Researchers believe it will also let them deliver better and faster treatments.

Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has approved rules that allow the Australian Research Council to allocate the funding to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The JDRF launched its Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network in 2011 through a $5 million grant from the federal government.

The foundation now funds 12 projects and a number of other grants across Australia.

"The network will be able to deliver better and faster access to new type 1 diabetes therapies and treatments for the community," JDRF chief Mike Wilson told AAP on Monday.

"This extra $35 million has the potential to transform Australia into a location for the world's best clinical research in type 1 diabetes."
