Tony Abbott has decided to keep a leather briefcase given to him by French President Francois Hollande.

Under ministerial rules, such gifts valued at $750 or more can be kept if a minister pays the difference between the allowable limit and the value of the gift plus GST on the difference.

The prime minister listed the briefcase in the latest update to his pecuniary interest register.
