French students will learn more about Australian history and culture as part of their regular curriculum.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne has signed an agreement with New Caledonian president Philippe Germain and French high commissioner Vincent Bouvier for Australian content to be included in the French baccalaureate, the Pacific territory's high school qualification.

It will be trialled in several New Caledonian schools first, with students spending about six hours a week studying Australian literature and four hours on history and geography.
