A former French soldier who BASE jumped off a crane in Darling Harbour has avoided jail.

Jonathan Perherin broke into a construction site and climbed a 250-metre crane about 3:15am on October 2.

He then BASE-jumped and parachuted over several lanes of traffic and Darling Harbour, before landing and being arrested.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty today and told 9NEWS outside the Downing Centre Local court: “I will not do this again anymore here, but in legal country, but not here.”

“Because I don't want to make trouble for other people and while other people can see me, they want to make the same, but they have no experience for that so it's not good.”

Mr Perherin was handed a conviction and a $660 fine for performing the illegal stunt.
