Free TAFE for Queensland school leavers

Thousands of Queensland students won’t pay a cent to go to TAFE from next year with the state government pledging to provide 160 courses free of charge.

Students who complete Year 12 in Queensland will have a full year after graduation to enrol in a “high priority qualification”. Some courses will be delivered on campus, while others will form part of an apprenticeship or traineeship.

The $30 million Free TAFE program was launched today by training and skills development minister Shannon Fentiman.

The minister visited Beenleigh State High School where students have been learning to cook under the guidance of celebrity chef and TAFE graduate Matt Golinski.

“Free TAFE for Year 12 graduates is a great opportunity for those who want to follow a path in any number of careers, including hospitality,” Ms Fentiman told students.

“Matt is a former TAFE student who completed his apprenticeship at Brisbane restaurants while at the former College of Tourism and Hospitality in South Brisbane.

“He now generously shares his skills and knowledge with the trainers and students to pass on his culinary tips to the next generation.”
