Victorian government offers free car registration for apprentices

Thousands of Australians will be able to register their cars for free under a new $10 million initiative from the Victorian government.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced eligible apprentices will be able to take advantage of the offer from July 1.

People who take part will be able to save up to $865 a year.

The offer will be open to apprentices - including carpenters, joiners, bricklayers, plumbers, electricians and chefs - whose employers can verify that their vehicle is an essential part of their work.

Eligible apprentices can apply for the free vehicle registration via the myVicRoads portal on the VicRoads website.

Currently, apprentices in Victoria who need their car for work are already entitled to a 50 per cent discount on registration fees.

More than 12,000 apprentices and trainees are currently taking advantage of the scheme.

For other Victorians, the government has introduced short-term registration, meaning people can split the fee into smaller payments.
