Man arrested after allegedly charging at police with machete in Frankston

A man has been arrested after allegedly charging at police with a machete, forcing an officer to fire his gun in Melbourne's south-east.

Police were confronted with the armed man when they arrived at Ashleigh Avenue in Frankston just before 9pm yesterday.

One officer fired a shot, which did not strike the man, after he allegedly rushed at police with the weapon.

"He was subsequently sprayed and arrested by police," Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, has been taken to hospital for assessment.

The incident has sparked a probe with the Professional Standards Command, as is practice when a police firearm is used.

"Regional detectives will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and Professional Standards Command have been notified, as per protocol when any police firearm is discharged," Sgt Newman said.

No police officers were injured.
