'It’s shattered my sense of security’: Victorian MP Jane Garrett assaulted in Melbourne’s north

Victorian MP Jane Garrett says being assaulted by a woman in Carlton yesterday afternoon was “horrifying”.

Ms Garrett, 43, suffered minor injuries after a woman allegedly grabbed her hair and attempted to push her through a hotel window while walking along Elgin Street in Carlton around 4pm.

“It’s shattered my sense of peace and security. It was really horrifying”, Ms Garrett told 9NEWS this morning.

She was reportedly on her way to a work meeting with her headphones on when the “shock attack” occurred.

“It was a shock attack and very frightening. I am grateful for the outstanding professionalism of the police,” she said.

Ms Garrett also thanked the bystanders who came to her aid at the scene of the alleged assault and the Australian public for their messages of support. 

A 52-year-old woman was arrested yesterday and remains under police guard.

Ms Garrett will take out a restraining order against the woman, according to 3AW.

Liberal MP Margaret Fitzherbert, Greens MP Ellen Sandell and Labor candidate for Frankston City Council Steve Toms have all tweeted their support for Ms Garrett.

Ms Garrett resigned as Emergency Services Minister in June as a result of the CFA pay deal saga.

A deal was eventually endorsed by the newly-appointed CFA board last Friday.
