Cyclone alert remains for Qld's far north

A cyclone warning remains for parts of Cape York in Queensland's far north as another cyclone tracks away from the central coast.

Cyclone Gillian is a category one system that's sitting 140 km southwest of Weipa, on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula.

It's expected to move in a southerly direction parallel to the coast over the next 12 hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns there's still a chance it could cross somewhere between Cape Keerweer and Pormpuraaw later on Monday.

The storm is showing signs of weakening and could be downgraded to a tropical low, however, it may intensify as it moves toward the Gulf of Carpentaria later this week.

A cyclone warning is in place from the mouth of the Gilbert River to Weipa and a cyclone watch remains from Port McArthur in the Northern Territory to the Gilbert River.

Residents have been warned storm tides could inundate areas between Aurukun and Kowanyama as the cyclone nears the coast.

A second category one cyclone, named Hadi, is situated 270 km northeast of Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.

It's strengthening as it moves away from the coast and is expected to remain well offshore.

A cyclone warning has been cancelled for communities between Ayr and St Lawrence, and the weather bureau says wind gusts and heavy rain have eased along the coast.

There have been four other cyclones in Queensland this wet season.
