Jailed Sydney arsonist's shop explosion caught on camera

A bumbling arsonist has been sentenced to two years’ jail time after blowing up his own grocery store – which turned out to be uninsured.

The judge described it as an “egregious case of being caught red-handed”, after the man was seen on CCTV setting fire to the building.

The hapless firebug was then buried in rubble, pictured struggling to escape from a pile of bricks and debris.

Chadi Jomaa broke both of his legs, injured his pelvis and neck and suffered burns to his face in the spectacular blast.

Starting with a blinding flash, the explosion consumed the Jomaa Market shop and the flat above his business.

The resident of that flat was crushed by the rubble and pictured dragging himself to safety after the blast.

Today, the Pendle Hill man’s wife stood by her partner at the sentencing.

“I am going to support my husband the whole way,” Jasmine Jomaa told 9NEWS.

“I’d like to thank all the police officers and the ambulance, and everyone else that was involved,” she said.

The court heard the father-of-six had a severe gambling addiction and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder from his experiences living in Lebanon.

However, the court ruled his past did not excuse his reckless behaviour which endangered the lives of others.

Jomaa will be eligible for parole in October.
