Melbourne's iconic Flinders Street Station is to return to its original 1910 colours as part of a $100 million redevelopment meant to restore the decaying landmark to its former glory.

The current mustard colour is out with the station to once again be painted a lighter shade of stone.

Existing maroon and green sections will be darkened to reflect the colours the station was painted when it first opened more than 100 years ago.

"Flinders Street Station will be returned to its original colours to reflect and celebrate the history of this iconic Melbourne landmark," Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said in a statement on Thursday.
