A thick blanket of fog has engulfed Melbourne this morning, disrupting flights and causing chaos on the roads.

Several flights in and out of the city have been diverted or cancelled but the airport remains open, despite earlier reports it had been closed.

Airservices Australia urged passengers to check with their individual airline regarding delays.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a road weather alert for all Melbourne suburbs with drivers being told to expect delays moving into the city.

The State Emergency Service has advised people to reduce speed and maintain a greater distance between them and the vehicle in front of them.

A frost warning also remains in place for most areas of Victoria.

The thick haze is expected to last all morning before it turns into low cloud later in the day, with expected tops of 15C.
